What do we take care of in the migration?

Code, content, infrastructure and search visibility are handled in one plan, by one team.

Content and structure

  • Migrating content, media and users
  • Converting removed structures such as Nested Content, Grid Layout and Macros (scope defined in the pre-assessment)
  • Pre-launch content comparison

Code and integrations

  • Moving the application code to .NET 10
  • Adapting custom backoffice extensions to the new backoffice architecture
  • Upgrading Umbraco Forms, Deploy, uSync and third-party packages, or identifying alternatives
  • Testing ERP, CRM and other integrations

Infrastructure

  • Preparing IIS/Windows Server, Azure or Umbraco Cloud environments
  • Configuring Cloudflare, caching and security headers
  • A separate test environment, rollback plan and release management

Technical SEO checks

  • Comparing all URLs before and after the migration
  • Preserving and verifying 301 redirects
  • Checking canonical, hreflang, sitemap and robots.txt
  • Preserving structured data (JSON-LD)
  • Measuring Core Web Vitals before and after
  • 30 days of Search Console monitoring after launch

After the migration, we also offer a maintenance service for regular version updates and security monitoring.

Why Umbraco 17?

Umbraco 17 is the first long-term support (LTS) release after Umbraco 13 and is supported until November 2028.

Long-term support

Umbraco 17 receives security and bug fixes until November 2028. Umbraco 18, by contrast, is a short-term release whose support ends in June 2027.

An up-to-date platform

It runs on .NET 10, Microsoft's long-term support release. Official add-ons such as Umbraco Forms and Deploy follow the same support schedule.

A redesigned backoffice

A faster, more accessible backoffice for editors. System dates are stored in UTC, so scheduled publishing is not affected by time zones.

Ready for new capabilities

Umbraco AI and Umbraco Automate are separate products available for Umbraco 17 and later. We can scope their setup and configuration to your needs.

For technical teams: what changed from 13 to 17?
Change Version How it is handled
Backoffice rewritten with Web Components (Lit) instead of AngularJS 14 Custom property editors, dashboards and backoffice extensions are moved to the new architecture.
Nested Content and Grid Layout removed 14 Content is converted to Block List / Block Grid.
Macros removed 14 Converted to partial views or blocks within rich text.
Backoffice APIs moved to the Management API; JSON handling moved to System.Text.Json 14 Custom API and integration code is updated.
Published cache rebuilt (snapshot model removed) 15 Models are regenerated and custom caching code is updated.
TipTap editor instead of TinyMCE 15–16 Data types are migrated automatically during the upgrade; a community package is available for those who want to keep TinyMCE.
System dates moved to UTC 17 Converted automatically during the upgrade; scheduled jobs are verified.
.NET 10 and HTTPS by default 17 The server runtime, IIS hosting bundle and deployment pipeline are updated.

Upgrading directly from Umbraco 13 to 17 is officially supported; there is no need to step through each intermediate version.

How does the migration work?

At the end of each step you see what we have delivered, and we decide on the next step together.

  1. Short call

After you apply, we talk about your site and expectations and agree on the information needed for the pre-assessment.

  2. Free pre-assessment

Once the required access is shared, we deliver the pre-assessment report within 1–3 business days.

  3. Proposal and plan

Effort and price are based on the assessment. We choose between an in-place upgrade and a fresh Umbraco 17 installation with content migration, and plan testing, approval and launch dates together.

  4. Migration and testing

The work is done in a separate environment, so your live site is not affected. After functional, visual, SEO and performance testing, your team carries out acceptance testing.

  5. Go-live and monitoring

Launch at a suitable time, a rollback plan on standby and 30 days of close monitoring.

What's in the pre-assessment report?

  • The recommended migration path
  • Key compatibility issues (packages, custom development, removed features)
  • Estimated effort

What will we need from you for the pre-assessment?

  • Read access to the source code (Git repository or project files)
  • A database backup or access to a test environment
  • Details of your hosting environment
  • A list of packages and integrations in use (if known)

“In our move from Umbraco 8 to 17, the FIXER team did a superb job of planning and the migration was completed exceptionally smoothly. All of our site content stayed intact, and our redirects and forms worked from day one. Working with a team that quickly closed the gaps we found during testing made us feel very secure.”

Frequently asked questions

When does Umbraco 13 support end?

On 14 December 2026. Since 14 December 2025, Umbraco 13 has only received security fixes. Support for .NET 8, which it runs on, ends on 10 November 2026.

What happens to our site after this date?

Your site keeps running; only new security updates stop being released.

How long does the migration take?

It depends on the structure of the site. Development effort starts from 2 business days for the simplest projects; testing, approval and the launch schedule are planned separately. The exact effort is determined in the pre-assessment.

How is the cost determined?

After the pre-assessment, we provide a proposal based on scope and effort. The pre-assessment is free and comes with no commitment.

Another agency built our site. Can you take on the migration?

Yes. With access to the source code and the project, we review the existing setup and identify any missing documentation in the pre-assessment. If source code access isn't available, we discuss the options in the first call.

Do we need to re-enter our content?

Existing content, media and users are migrated. How older or custom structures will be converted is determined in the pre-assessment.

Will our site stay live during the migration?

Yes. The work is done in a separate environment; a short content freeze is planned before launch.

What do you do to protect our search visibility?

URL comparison, redirects, canonical, hreflang and structured data checks are part of the migration plan. We monitor Search Console for 30 days after launch.

Can we redesign the site as well?

Yes. On the fresh Umbraco 17 installation path, it is usually more efficient to renew the design and content architecture in the same project.

Should we stay on our own server or move to Umbraco Cloud?

We work with both. A migration is also a good opportunity to review your hosting choice.

Why 17 and not 18?

17 is a long-term support release, supported until November 2028; 18 is a short-term release whose support ends in June 2027. In addition, an existing 13 installation cannot be upgraded directly to 18; you first need to upgrade to 17, or do a fresh installation and migrate the content.

We're planning the migration for 2027. What do you recommend?

Umbraco's paid XLTS programme extends security support for Umbraco 13. Doing the pre-assessment now lets you plan your budget and timeline comfortably.

Can we use Umbraco AI and Automate right away?

They are separate products that run on Umbraco 17 and later, and they require setup and configuration. We can scope them to your needs alongside or after the migration.
